This week’s Torah portion, “Vayetzei,” means “And he left” and it is found in Genesis 28:10. We begin with Jacob fleeing his home and family in Beersheva, as Esau wants to kill him for stealing his blessing from their father Isaac. Jacob encamps in Beth El where he dreams of a ladder connecting heaven and earth, with angels ascending and descending; Then G-d promises Jacob that he will protect him, bring him back to Canaan, and give the land to Jacob’s descendants.
In Charan, Jacob agrees to work for his uncle Laban, for 7 years, in order to marry his daughter, Rachel. Laban tricks Jacob and switches Rachel for Leah on their wedding day. Jacob marries Rachel a week later and agrees to work another seven years for Laban. During this time, all of Jacob’s children are born except for Benjamin.
After 20 years, Jacob wants to return to Canaan. Laban doesn’t want him to go so Jacob secretly leaves with his wives, children, and flocks. Laban, along with his men, pursues and overtakes Jacob. He wants to kill Jacob, but is warned by G‑d not to harm him. Laban and Jacob make peace and go their separate ways. On the way to Canaan, Jacob is met by angels.
