Chanukah 1st Night Lighting and Nosh
Chanukah, Festival of Lights, is a time where we celebrate both physical and spiritual miracles. We celebrate the miraculous military victory of the Maccabees (Jewish priestly family and their followers) over the Seleucids (Macedonian Greek rulers and their followers) in the 2nd century B.C.E. This victory ended the Hellenization of the Jewish people and reinstated the practice of Judaism.
We also celebrate the miracle that occurred after the Priests and Levites reoccupied and rededicated the Temple. This culminated in lighting the menorah. However, there was only enough pure olive oil to keep the menorah lit for 1 day. After lighting the menorah, the oil miraculously burned for 8 days, allowing time for more olive oil to be prepared to keep the menorah lit. This occurrence symbolizes the faith and resilience of the Jewish people and connecting to the Spirit of G-d.

These events occurred over 2,000 years ago. One focus is a military victory ending a religious and cultural annihilation.
-
The other focus is the lighting of the menorah lasting 8 days.

Is there anything we can learn from these events? Do they have applicability to our spiritual walk?

Please join us and let’s get into it!
